10 Essentials: October Edition (5 Essentials)

I’ve had a few requests to bring this back, it became a little time consuming, but with the weather cooling down, I’ve got nothing but time on my hands at the moment. I’ll typically post 10 items or ideas, but being that we’re over half way through the month I’m just going to select 5 items instead.

1. A Heavy Sports Coat: (Tweed, Herringbone, Flannel)

I recently purchased a full Flannel suit from work; it’s Fall, I wanted a heavier suit to wear throughout the season, and I wanted the jacket to double as a sports coat to pair jeans with. Granted you’re only going to get about another month’s use out of it if you’re in the upper Midwest area, but elsewhere in the country you should wear this look out. The beauty about flannel or tweed is that it can be dressed up just as easily as it can be dressed down. You can wear it with a nice stiff gingham or a casual tartan without a problem. Regardless of your choosing, remember to have it taken in as you would with a suit jacket; an ill-fitting jacket is no good, no matter how you wear it. Wear it with jeans, scarf, and a long wing or saddle shoe.

2. Hillside Scarf:

One of the best purchases made in the last month. I’m never not impressed with the products Hillside offers, great Chambray and Wool blended accessories. I don’t think I should do anymore explaining, their reputation precedes them…in a good way of course. Wear it with a well fitted jean jacket, pea coat, toggle, or the previously mentioned coats in #1.

3. Invest In Two Variations of a Boot:

Alden Indy

Alden Cap Toe

I think it’s important to have a few different pairs of boots in your arsenal. Call me crazy but I think it’s important to differentiate between a dressier boot and a rugged boot. The importance behind a boot like the two above is that it can be worn with a suit or jeans in the city and your look is absolutely fine, they compliment each other very well. But you’re not going to go stomping around in the country or foothills in an Alden Cap Toe, at least I hope not at $600+ a pair. That’s where these come into play:

Quoddy Grizzly

Ronnie Fieg 8” Moc Red Wing

These were made to be worn in nature, the crepe sole on the Quoddy wears down a bit too easily on pavement from my experience. I love my Grizzly’s to death but they’re not intended for anything other than nature wear. Red Wing has always, and will always make great boots, the vibram soles give these a great look that can be worn in a city atmosphere. But I would suggest dressing the Quoddy’s and the Red Wings down with denim, cords, and chinos; cuff them, throw on a button up, layer it, and finish it off with a pea coat (or toggle) and a beanie or a gatsby.
In order from top to bottom:
Alden Indy: $450
Alden Cap Toe: $620
Quoddy Grizzly: $360
Red Wing 8” Moc: $280

4. Baxter of California: Facial Scrub

I’ve been an avid user of all Baxter products (besides their pomade, Lay Rite works all too well for me), and this one is no different. I picked up this facial scrub about 2 months back and it works splendidly. You’re a man and exfoliating your face isn’t necessary right? Wrong, it’s more important than you think when attempting to obtain good, healthy skin. Use once a week. The best part is how clean your face feels afterwards. You can find this just about anywhere at around $15 a pop.

5. Grow a Beard:

It’s cold out, and who really enjoys shaving? Unless your beard resembles that of Joe Dirt, then please shave, a patchy beard if not flattering. However a full beard, or even partly full beard is. From my experience most women enjoy a man with a beard, so give it a try, if it doesn’t work for you, you’re not out a whole lot.

Thanks for reading, I appreciate your time regardless of what your opinion on my 10 5 picks are. If you have any ideas or suggestions toss them into my ask box.
