10 Essentials

GQ does a weekly slideshow about 10 essential items suggested by a top designer, ie: 10 items the designer uses/needs in his or her daily routine. Without ripping GQ off too much, I’m using the same principle. Once a month I’m going to post my ten essential items/things that I’m found with throughout my day with a brief description. In no particular order:

1. Tom Ford Jack Sunglasses:

Though lately, the weather has been quite gloomy and overcast; there’s something about these sunglasses that makes me feel I’m at the top of my game. While having a freshly ironed shirt, crisply rolled jeans, waxed boots, and a recent haircut may make you feel and look great; these sunglasses will top off whatever you’re wearing. They’ll get you points among optic snobs, and help you stick out more than everyone else in wayfarers (not knocking em’, I’m also an owner).

2. Belmont Barbershop

While I obviously don’t visit the barbershop everyday, I try to stick to my timeline of getting a cut every two weeks. Why? For the most part it keeps me looking like I have a fresh haircut at all times. For $17 bucks you can’t get a better haircut in my opinion, Josh and Jesse give me the best high and tight fades in the city. Great atmosphere, a real “man” barbershop feel; no thrills, just great haircuts and good conversation.

3. Aldo Water Resistant Lotion

The best solution for street salt on leather boots that is known to man. Oddly enough, smells exactly like layrite pomade (which in my opinion is a definite plus). Anytime I receive awful salt damage I turn to this; a few minutes to apply to each boot, 10 minutes to sit, and a quick rub with a damp cloth and you’re good as new. It’s the best $8.99 you can spend if you want to keep your $100+ footwear long lasting.

4. Baxter Of California: Daily Face Wash

I have a problem with controlling excess oil on my face, specifically my forehead and nose. This facial wash certainly helps rectify that situation. I use it twice daily; in the morning when I shower, and at night right before I go to bed. I usually follow it up by running a small towel under steaming hot water and holding that on my face for about 30 seconds or so. I highly recommend this if you’re looking for something to keep you feeling clean all day.

5. Apple TV

Yes, I’m thoroughly in love with this device. Yes, I know it’s not better than having cable television, but it’s pretty damn close. I’m an avid movie watcher, so on a slow Sunday it’s not uncommon for me to watch 3-4 films. It’s great if you have netflix (obviously), added bonuses are being able to watch trailers for movies in HD months ahead of time, HD movie rentals as low as $1, and having the world of Youtube at your fingertips on a screen much larger than say…10 inches.

6. Warby Parker Glasses (Filmore)

Fashionably conscious? Yes, actually. Frames that look designer at a fraction of the price and what’s that? They make you feel good when you purchase a pair too. For $95 you get frames, prescription lenses (with anti-glare coating), shipping, a 30-day return policy (which is unheard of with prescription glasses), oh and they DONATE a pair to the less fortunate for every purchase they receive. It’s really a win-win-win situation. Also, if you don’t find anything aesthetically pleasing regarding their current collection, they have a new line coming out in a few weeks. www.warbyparker.com

7. J. Crew Authentic Camp Socks

Let’s see, today’s high is supposed to be….13*, and it currently feels like -2*. See where this is going? Yes, Tim insists on giving me a hard time for paying $12 for a pair of socks, but these things get it done, well worth the price.

8. Biotin Gel Caps

Biotin is a protein compound that helps promote healthy skin, nails, and hair growth (collagen). I’ve been taking this supplement for about 4 years now and I feel that I’ve benefited from it. You can find it just about everywhere for about $10 a bottle. It certainly can’t hurt trying.

9. A People’s History of The United States

“Read A People’s History of The United States, that book will fucking blow your mind”, Good Will Hunting. I’ve read this book numerous times, and it has yet to stop blowing my fucking mind. Great book, fascinating to say the least. I try and re-read it anytime I’m bored or having a slow day, which as you can imagine occurs quite often.

10. Glass Bottle Coke

Do I drink Coke every day? No. Every other day? No. That’s besides the point. Coke should only be consumed one way; via glass bottle. It just tastes better, that’s a fact. If for some reason you disagree, I can only be forced to ask how you got this far in life? No, that’s not a rhetorical question, I would literally like to know how you were able to operate a computer to get onto the internet? (if you think Mexican Coke doesn’t for some unexplainable reason taste better than all others) Because you’re a moron.
