I’m going to lay out some items I feel are necessary to make the transition into the business environment for a first time grad as seamless as possible. I know some of these things seem out of reach as far as price is concerned, but with careful searching you can find exactly what you need at an affordable price (keep your college ID too).

Navy or Charcoal Suit: You never know when you need a suit, be it business or otherwise every man should have a well tailored, well fitting suit. Typically most young men make the mistake of purchasing a black suit as their first suiting decision; this is the wrong decision. A black suit should be your 4th or 5th purchase, something further down the line; it’s far too formal and hardly ever necessary for work events or a work atmosphere. The key here is versatility, with a navy or charcoal suit you have the flexibility of wearing it to a wedding, a business meeting, a formal business dinner, or a funeral. My first purchase was a J. Crew Worsted Wool suit in charcoal; I ended up buying an Italian Wool Navy suit five suits in. Both Club Monaco and J. Crew make excellent fitting suits at an affordable price, as does Suit Supply. A great way to make this an affordable endeavor is to use your student ID at such establishments (Club Monaco gives 20% off, J. Crew gives 15%). Typically you can find the J. Crew Ludlow suiting pants on eBay for $100 (nearly 1/2 their retail price tag). Just remember to buy what fits you best in the shoulders (in terms of a jacket) and take the suit to a tailor.

Longwings: Versatility is the key here; just as wearable with a suit as it is with chinos or denim. Lean towards a dark brown, unless you feel like you can pull of a tobacco or whiskey (shown). Alden is the ideal source of such a shoe, but other quality shoes can be found in similar style at a fraction of the price (Allen Edmonds, Florsheim). Just remember that if you’re purchasing a leather soled shoe you’ll need to have plates (plastic taps) installed at both the toe and the heal, it will lengthen the life of the sole by years and at $6.00 a pop for replacement it doesn’t hurt your pocket too much.

Khaki, Grey and Navy Chino Dress Pants: Being that your dress code is fairly liberal you can get away with wearing chinos to work rather than a full suit. As long as their well-fitting, these can work wonders on your wardrobe. J. Crew makes the epitome of a wear to work fitted slim pant (484 Essential Chino); I have a few pairs of these and on the days I feel like dressing up (if I don’t want to wear a suit) they’re my go to. If your office is very causal give them a few rolls and show a little ankle. Pair them with a shirt and tie (mixing patterns in the complimenting colors) or with a suiting jacket and a shirt (no tie required but throw in a pocket square if you’d like).

Dress shirts: Multiple dress shirts for your suit; this took me years to learn. Yes, you do need 2-3 shirts of the same pattern, why? Because you don’t want to have to wash the same shirt multiple times a week just so you can wear it to work. By doing this you aren’t damaging the fabric as often and you’re building a professional wardrobe, and keeping your sanity. It’s good to have casual plaids, oxfords, and patterned shirts too but for suiting purposes you need something with a higher thread count (not always though, in the summer it’s ideal to wear an oxford or indian plaid with a suit).

Ties, Pocket Squares, Tie Clips: I would estimate you don’t need more than 10 ties, 5 pocket squares and 2 tie clips to rotate effectively and keep your looks fresh. Buy the ties at J. Crew, Club Monaco, RL, and really anywhere else; purchase your pocket squares and tie bars from thetiebar.com. You don’t need to drop more than $15 dollars on a 13”x13” piece of fabric and clip of metal. Make sure the tie bar is at least 1/4” shorter than the width of your tie.

Other Pieces : Once you’ve built up your base wardrobe you can venture out into other pieces; suede bucks or suede longwings, more suiting options, v-neck and crew neck sweaters, patterned jackets (herringbone and tweed for the winter). Other than that you should feel comfortable putting together outfits you feel are appropriate for your work atmosphere.

Wow. I am extremely impressed with your answer. Very wise and thoughtful. As a woman who weighs in at 127 at 5'7, I am considered a "curvy" woman by most men. Now, this isn't a bad title, but i'm a size 2-4. I often feel categorized by my size before I actually have a chance to speak. I understand you aren't content with the topic, but one last thing if you don't mind. Who are some women you admire and why?

By the description of your body (in terms of height and weight) that seems the epitome of a normal sized woman to me; if anyone is categorizing and writing you off on that then that’s their mistake. As far a women I admire, the stereotypical answer comes to mind; my grandmothers. My maternal grandmother was left with three children to raise on her own; she did so by working at a school for the deaf and blind and did so with complete success. My paternal grandmother worked in a sugar factory (a position and industry dominated by men) and left high school early to start a family, but had the urge to go back and finish by getting her GED; which she accomplished at the age of 45. These aren’t huge strides in comparison to those that led the women’s suffrage movement or the civil rights movement but they’re obviously special to me. Other’s that come to mind are:
Gloria Steinem, Katherine Hepburn, Chan Marshall, Edith Piaf, Joan Didion, Francoise Hardy, Billie Holiday.
